The Mariathon, an annual event to raise funds for the work of Radio Maria

Balderschwang is a village about two hours drive from Munich, Germany. It has a population of over two hundred inhabitants, and it is only about two kilometres away from Austria. Balderschwang is the headquarters of Radio Horeb (the German name of Radio Maria).

The Mariathon, an annual event to raise funds for the work of Radio Maria, held from 5th to 7th May, 2023, in Balderschwang.

The President of World Radio Maria is Vittorio Viccardi, the coordinator for Africa is Jean Paul Kayihura. There are many dedicated volunteers who came from different parts of Germany. They were warmly received by the director of Radio Horeb in Germany, Fr. Richard Kocher (initiator of Radio Horeb).

Fr. Rocher conducted me around the facilities of Radio Horeb in Balderschwang, during which I saw many dedicated volunteer workers each in his/her cubicle, many of them professionals (doctors, computer experts, lawyers, etc), very busy working the phones with visible enthusiasm to ensure the success of this year’s mariathon. Callers phoned in to express their solidarity with Radio Maria and to announce their donations for the success of evangelization by Radio Maria especially in Africa. Countries like Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Malawi, are to be the major beneficiaries of this year’s fund raise for the establishment of Radio Maria studios. Many Radio Maria studios are expected to be opened soon in many parts of Africa, with the help of Radio Horeb and the world Family of Radio Maria. What stood out for me was not merely the donations being announced by phone to Radio Horeb in order to set up more radio stations in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe, but there was the fervent prayer, adoration, rosary, daily Masses, etc., by both the full-time staff, volunteers and other Radio Maria supporters visiting. Radio Horeb promotes with very great interest the Catholic faith, and the teachings and traditions of the Catholic Church; which explains why prayer, Eucharistic adoration and praying the rosary are frequent, and this attracts so much goodwill for the organization, to enhance its work of evangelization. May God bless the noble initiative of Radio Horeb in Germany, and the World-wide Radio Maria family to enable them establish Radio Maria soon, especially in every country of sub-Saharan Africa. This of course, depends on God’s Providence and the goodwill and generosity of listeners.
