Fr. Paul Zirra Aiden

Today, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama officially commissioned in the Archdiocese the first briquettes-making facility at our Lady of Fatima parish, Sheda, in Kwali Area Council Abuja.

The briquettes facility which is an initiative of the Justice Department, Development and Peace Commission (JDPC ) in partnership with CAFOD is in line with Pope Francis Laudato Si Encyclical on Care for our common Home, the Earth.

The Archbishop during the commissioning reminded the people that the project was in line with the tree planting campaign he carried out last year in Gwagwalada, aimed at curbing deforestation and global warming which are very important in the Laudato Si document of the Holy Father.

At the commissioning, he used the opportunity to demonstrate how the briquettes charcoal can be used especially by the rural women and households, using the fabricated briquettes stove. He also took a tour of the facility to see for himself how the Briquettes Charcoal is produced. The Briquettes Charcoal is made from wastes e.g. rice paddy waste, saw dust, dry leaves, etc.

The Archbishop appreciating members of the Zumunta Mata, the CWO and Christian Mothers for their dedication to the work of God in the Archdiocese, donated to the 151 of them present at the commissioning one Briquettes Charcoal Stove and Briquettes Charcoal, saying he got a donation of 2.5 Million Naira which aided him to purchase the items for the women. He hopes that these briquettes charcoal and stove will be well advertised, bought and used in parishes.

The building of the factory and the acquiring of equipment were realized mainly with support from the UK Catholic Agency For Overseas Development (CAFOD). Present at the commissioning were the Chairman, JDPC, Sir Josephat Abaagu, KSM, representatives of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation; Mr. Kelechi, the Country Representative of CAFOD in Nigeria and many others.
