Mass with the indigenous people of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT)

THE THIRD CONGRESS OF THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE OF THE FCT, 29TH JUNE, 2024.

The Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama on this day, the 29th of June, on the Solemnity of two great pillars of the Church, Saints Peter and Paul, celebrated the Mass with the indigenous people of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which comprises the Gbagyi, the Koro and the Gwandara people. This event took place at the site of the New Cathedral building of Twelve Apostles, Karsana, Abuja. This celebration, highlights the Church’s commitment to inclusivity and community engagement.

Archbishop Kaigama, known for his advocacy for grassroot evangelization and for social justice and peace, emphasized the importance of recognizing and respecting the indigenous people, the original dwellers of the FCT whom, if due care is not taken, are relegated to the margins.

The Mass featured traditional music and cultural expressions, creating a vibrant and spiritually enriching atmosphere. This celebration not only honored the heritage of the indigenous people but also strengthened the bonds between the Catholic Church and the local communities.

It was a joyful moment, as the people turned out in their numbers, both Christians and Muslims, to celebrate with the Archbishop. In attendance were a host of priests within the Archdiocese and some visitors from Poland, led by Rev. Fr. Prof. Cislo Waldemar. Three Rev. Sisters from the Apostolic Nunciature were equally present.

It was really a wonderful celebration and we look forward to next year’s celebration on June 28, 2025, by the grace of God.
